Practical ranking guide

How to check your Google ranking accurately

A useful ranking check starts with a clear search context. Follow these steps to track the searches that matter, understand the result and choose a sensible next action.

1. Choose a specific keyword and website

Start with the exact words your potential customer might search. Add your domain and a small set of relevant keywords to a project. Keep brand searches separate from broader service or product searches: they answer different questions about your visibility.

For a new site, choose a realistic mix of a main phrase and more specific searches. Record the current result before changing your page. A single position is a starting observation; a series of checks gives you a more useful comparison.

2. Keep country, location, language and device consistent

For searches in Croatia, choose Croatia from the supported Google location catalog. Use a supported city or region if that better represents your customers. Then choose the search language and desktop or mobile. An English query searched in Croatia is a different context from the same query searched in another country.

Keep those settings unchanged when comparing dates. Google explains that time, location, language, device and personalization can affect results. A private browser window alone does not reproduce every setting of a tracked check.

3. Set up your 7-day automatic daily refresh

Every plan starts with the free Starter trial: 7 days of automatic daily refresh for up to 5 Google keyword-device checks per day. One keyword on one device uses one slot. The same keyword on desktop and mobile uses two, so choose the combinations that matter most.

For example, track two important keywords on both devices and a third on mobile: that is five daily checks. Automatic Google updates build your history without spending your 50 extra manual credits. Full paid limits become available after payment.

4. Use manual credits when you need another check

Your new account also includes 50 extra credits for manual rechecks. Select the keyword or keywords and run a manual sync when you need a new observation before the next scheduled update. Each Google keyword-device check costs 1 credit.

A manual restart requests a fresh ranking check; it does not request Google to crawl, index or improve your page. After editing a website, allow for Google to process the change rather than spending credits repeatedly expecting an immediate ranking response.

5. Read “outside the Top 40” correctly

Ranking Checker checks the first 40 organic results for your selected context. If your domain is outside the Top 40, it was not found within that checked range at that time. It may appear lower down; this result does not establish whether a page is indexed.

Use Search Console URL Inspection when your question is whether Google knows about a specific URL. A newly launched site can be indexed and still appear beyond the range checked by this tool.

6. Compare with Search Console thoughtfully

Search Console reports average position from recorded impressions across the filters and dates you select. A Ranking Checker check is a sampled observation for a chosen keyword, location, language, device and time. The two values describe different measurements and need not match.

In Search Console, filter the query, page, country and device before comparing trends. Read impressions and clicks alongside position. Use the direct ranking check for a current observation and Search Console for how your site performed in actual Google search impressions.

7. Turn the trend into a focused next step

Review several comparable checks before reacting to a small move. Look at whether the page answers the search intent clearly, provides useful details and links to relevant supporting pages. Note the date of each meaningful edit so you can compare later observations.

Share the project report with a client or colleague to discuss the same data. Rank tracking measures changes; it does not guarantee a position or improve rankings automatically.
